Abstract:
The research spin-off phenomenon has attracted a significant attention in recent years at European and US levels. Nevertheless, few are the analyses focused on the Italian case. This paper aims to investigate the research spin-off context in Italy. Particular attention is devoted to compare a sample of research spin-offs with a matched sample of start-ups in order to highlight differences in the performance. Italy provides a good setting for such an analysis. The initiatives carried out in recent years, the interest towards the research spin-off phenomenon and the number of research spin-offs established in Italy in the last ten years have increased so conspicuously that an overall investigation was really necessary and desirable.
