Abstract:
?Since the 90s, we have witnessed a proliferation of innovation contests, especially in the US, through the sponsorship of public organizations such as federal agencies. The aim of this article is to analyze the origin of the factors behind this renewed interest of the US federal government in these contests and their associated prizes. Relying on an institutional approach, we shed light on the particular nature and functions of the contests, with regards in particular to another system of incentives for innovation: the patent system. Relying on the functional approach of the Innovation System, we show that prizes and patents cannot be considered as alternatives per se, but rather as mutually complementary in given circumstances. In addition, we illustrate the ways the US public administration uses prizes in order to stimulate research and innovation in certain circumstances.?
