Revue d'économie industrielle, 2020, vol. n° 170, issue 2, 111-150

Abstract: This paper addresses the performance of French universities in the year 2014, with regard to their missions of training and research. This paper delivers an original empirical analysis of the French case; it defines the concept of performance in terms of its geographical field and assumes that territorial characteristics play a defining role in performance scores. To carry out this work, we use a semi-parametric methodology. In a first step, we computed the performance scores of the French universities via a DEA (data envelopment analysis) model. The results show significant differences compared to the existing international rankings. In a second step, we explore the determinants of the French universities? performance using environmental and competition variables. The results show that competition enhances the performance of the French universities. JEL classification: H52, I23, O43, R11.
