Genre et inégalité de revenu: le cas des annonces de cours particuliers sur internet

Christophe Lévêque and Matteo Cavallaro

Revue d'économie industrielle, 2020, vol. n° 171, issue 3, 47-87

Abstract: We use a case study?online ads for private lessons?to highlight gender inequality in the labor market. These ads have a particular analytical advantage: the advertiser chooses the price. This price therefore informs us about suppliers? beliefs regarding the quality of their service and their ability to find customers. Thus, it allows us to work out whether the differences observed during laboratory experiments (Beyer 1990, 1999a, 1999b) in terms of men?s and women?s attitudes or confidence in their abilities, which are suspected of contributing to wage inequalities in the labor market, can be observed in a real market. We find a difference in price between ads using feminine adjectives and titles and those that are gender-neutral. We suggest that a double segmentation of the market may explain this difference. Men and women do not teach the same disciplines. Moreover, we suggest that women tend to specialize in areas that pay less (such as lessons for children). JEL classification: D49, D91, J16, L84.
