Abstract:
This paper explores the effects that universities? technology transfer (TT) activities can have on local innovation performance. To do so, the panel data model of difference-in-differences was applied at the level of the Italian provinces (NUTS3) for the period 1999?2012. The results suggest that the presence of a university with a TT strategy boosts local innovation performance. The magnitude of this effect varies according to the quality of the research carried out by the university. Finally, we look at the conditions under which the institutionalization of TT, through the creation of an ad hoc structure, can have a significant marginal effect. Endogeneity and spatial autocorrelation tests confirm the robustness of the results. JEL classification: O34, C23, R11.
