Abstract:
Over the last few years, a new generation has clearly voiced their preference for a repreneurial career (i.e. to become entrepreneur through a buyout). In Quebec, 19.4% of nascent entrepreneurs envision their career through a buyout, whether it be a family succession, a MBO or a MBI, while the number of owner-operators ready to pass on their businesses is still increasing (Cossette et Mélançon, 2010; Fondation de l?Entrepreneurship, 2010). However, in many aspects, the contexts and challenges are not the same for repreneurs as for nascent entrepreneurs. Therefore, this paper?s objective is to understand, from existing literature, the context and challenges of a repreneurial career, and then propose an initial reflection on the career path of a repreneur. In this regard, this paper will identify what differentiates repreneurs in their background, their management style, as well as the management challenges associated with buyouts, and will conclude with a theoretical model of repreneurial career.
