Abstract:
This work studies the ways in which artisans? individual skills affect the sustainability of their VSEs (very small enterprises). The concept of organizational sustainability assumes that, in order to survive, an organization will have to find a balance between continuity and change. We apply a combinatorial approach to artisans? individual skills to examine how they sustain their VSEs and how they achieve this balance between continuity and change. To do this, we conducted four case studies. The results allow us to analyze the interaction between the artisans? different skills through the lens of the combinatorial approach. We also show that entrepreneurial skill is a determining factor in the search for organizational sustainability, particularly in achieving a balance between continuity and change. We discuss the concepts of skill and organizational sustainability.
