Abstract:
In the case of reentry into venturing after a failure, internal causal attribution is supposed to helps to draw lessons for the new project. Attributions may evolve over time, but not all factors that might explain it are known. We therefore seek to identify them and understand their interactions with attribution change. Through longitudinal qualitative research with 11 entrepreneur-coach dyads within 60,000 rebounds, we establish that internal attributions can be narcissistic (protecting self-esteem) or emancipatory (reflecting a cognitive effort). We show through which mechanisms the entrepreneur switches to emancipatory attributions.
