Revue de l'Entrepreneuriat, 2023, vol. Hors Série 1, issue HS1, 21-48

Abstract: We investigate how family members? commitment to the firm affects exploratory innovation in family firms and whether firms? value system moderates that relationship. Based on a sample of 47 French family SMEs, findings revealed that commitment is negatively related to firms? exploratory innovation, and that building a firm?s value system has a positive influence on exploratory innovation, corroborating the favorable moderating effect of this variable. We show the importance of building an organizational value system in shaping the orientation of these firms toward innovation, as this system contributes to mitigate the negative effects of family commitment.
