Abstract: This study deals with the four questions on economical opinions asked in the last European Values Survey (1999). Economical liberalism appears to be a little bit more widespread than interventionism in the EU. With some exceptions, it is more frequent in Northern than Southern Europe or in Western than Eastern Europe. Beyond this geographical diversity, these opinions are the consequences of ideological, social position and interest differences, but they are also the result of moral reasons, and then what divides Europeans is not enough for a complete explanation. Their attitudes also derive from an effort to agree on reasonable principles liable to reach a unanimous consent, in other words from a research of social justice to which a priority is given and that can be spot by reasoning like behind a ?veil of ignorance?.
