Les nouvelles générations devant la panne prolongée de l'ascenseur social

Louis Chauvel

Revue de l'OFCE, 2006, vol. 96, issue 1, 35-50

Abstract: The French society have faced thirty years of economic stagnation and of new intercohort socioeconomic inequalities that are challenging the young generations that experience a strong backlash in the dynamics of social upward mobility that characterized the previous period. After their entry on the labour market in a period of mass unemployment, the young generation face three profound breaks that we analyse here: a decline in their relative economic situation, stronger risks of downward mobility, a political marginalization. Because of its duration, these new malfunctions of the ?social lift? involve in the French society a profound fragility and strong uncertainties that will not spontaneously disappear.
