Abstract: Inventor, with Milton Friedman, of the concept of natural rate of unemployment, Edmund Phelps put it at the core of macroeconomic analysis. We describe his important and special role in the development of an integrated macroeconomic corpus, the refining of its microeconomic foundations and its permanent renewal.
