Abstract: Rating-type questions are sometimes used in valuation surveys. Responses have to be treated with care since individuals may perceive the scale differently. In order to study this issue, ratings provided by respondents in a survey designed to compare two different choice tasks are used. The results show the importance of providing a point of reference in rating-type questions so that the risk to reach misleading conclusions can be limited.
