Revue d'économie politique, 2007, vol. 117, issue 6, 891-919
Abstract:
This article was written in recognition of the completion of the publication of the OEuvres économiques complètes of Léon Walras and his father, Auguste. Those writings are important because Auguste contributed concepts to his son?s ideas about economics and because the presentation of the complete economic works of Léon provides a definitive basis for attaining a deep and well-rounded comprehension of the ideas of the most important French economist, and thus of the origins and hence of the character of much of modern microeconomic theory. The diverse aspects of the OEuvres économiques complètes are the subject of the article. Section 1 provides a brief history of the publication project. Section 2 explains why it is worthwhile, and evaluates the editing of the volumes. Section 3 examines the problems, possibilities, and progress concerning the world-wide diffusion of the Walras?s ideas. Sections4 and 5 review the volumes in the project. The final section sets forth the authors? major conclusions and offers some general observations regarding the ideas of Léon Walras and the ?uvres économiques complètes.
