Abstract:
This paper aims at studying the cinema demand in France from 1975 to 2004. The relative weight of the explanatory variables is examined (price, income, competition coming form both television and video), which enables to see how cinema?s perception changed in people?s mind. The obtained price elasticity made us consider cinema as pretty close to the ?higher performing arts? of Throsby [1994]. The income elasticity of demand reinforces this point of view, as it classifies cinema as a luxury good. Regarding television and video recording, we obtain significant results in the long run. They both have a negative impact on cinema attendance. They might have become more popular ways to watch a movie, making the cinema only available for some sections of population. Finally, it?s seems that cinema became a luxury good. It lost the popular status it had kept for many years.
