Abstract:
The ethics of care is a moral philosophy which proposes an alternative to the dominant moral approach. It offers a behavioral model that challenges the concept of a rational and selfish individual on which standard economics is based. The ethics of care emphasizes the moral sensibilities of individuals and their ability to ?take care? of others. In this paper, we analyze how the theory of care can help us to understand economic pro-environmental behavior. We consider at first the founding moral principles of the ethics of care. We then show that the ethics of care provides the conceptual tools to address environmental issues and that several experimental economics studies reveal the fruitfulness of its analysis. Finally, we consider the thorny issue of ?caring at a distance? regarding global environmental issues.
