Challenges in the teaching of econometrics: the lesson of Pietro Balestra

Abstract: This paper considers the challenges for the teaching of econometrics that are implied by some major transformations characterizing current research in econometrics. The focus is on the increasing mathematical sophistication and technicality, as well as on the strong growth of the literature in this field. The paper discusses how the teaching experience of Pietro Balestra may suggest some strong guiding principles to face these important challenges.
