Abstract:
This article analyses the economic impact of the Strasbourg universities, including associated research institutions, on the local area. University must first be considered as a consumer of goods and services that has a significant local impact. An even more important impact was found for the function of localising populations of students, teachers, researchers and people involved in administration. Lastly, the basic functions fulfilled by academic institutions contribute indirectly to improvement of human capital and firms? localisation. In addition to the statistical results obtained (which are quite representative of a French major regional university site), this article raises methodological questions related to the evaluation of economic impact on a territory of the size considered here : urban area and county.
