Répartition de la croissance dans le système des villes françaises

Fabien Paulus and Denise Pumain

Revue d'économie régionale et urbaine, 2002, vol. février, issue 1, 35-48

Abstract: The distribution of urban growth in a system of cities is often adjusted by a stochastic model. We apply this model to the French urban system, for the period of intense urbanisation in the second half of XXth century. We consider as urban units the newly defined ?aires urbaines? which are better adapted for the measurement of recent urbanisation. The deviations from the model confirm the century-long trend to reinforcement of inequalities in city size. They also emphasise a temporal autocorrelation, becoming stronger than before, which increases the regional differentials in urban growth. These results may help in developing new methods for modelling the distribution of urban growth in the future. Classification JEL : R11 R12.
