De l'urbain vers le rural: les transferts d'établissements de l'agro-alimentaire

Abstract: Events such as plant creation, closure, and relocation have a considerable effect on employment. This paper looks specifically at plant transfers from urban to periurban or rural areas. First we propose an analytic framework derived from New Economic Geography models. The paper then presents a statistical report and a number of case studies involving the French Food Industry. Although it does not occur on a massive scale plant transfer is a non-negligible phenomenon even so. One major reason for plant transfer is the desire to modernize production equipment and to increase capacity in a less constrained geographical setting. Decisive factors in the choice of a new location include good highway access and the availability of a stable and hard-working labor supply, characteristics which are often attributed to workers from farming backgrounds.
