Pratiques modales des déplacements de personnes en milieu urbain: des rationalités d'usage à la cohérence de l'action publique

Vincent Kaufmann

Revue d'économie régionale et urbaine, 2003, vol. février, issue 1, 39-58

Abstract: This article analyses the rationales underlying modal practices in daily life. Using a survey sample of 3.000 people in modal choice situations in the six cities of Besançon, Grenoble, Toulouse (France), Berne, Geneva and Lausanne (Switzerland), which are characterised by their contrasting use of transportation means, the results show that the motivations for people?s habits, modal preference and the comparative efficiency of modes of transportation are all factors that explain modal practice and shape urban dynamics. The fact that these urban dynamics facilitate the use of the car or other means of transport depends on the coherence of public action with respect to public transportation, road access management and the integration of urban development and transportation.
