Abstract:
The French town (city) name changes are an old but yet modern practice, namely because of the importance of local authorities, image and communication. The increasing changes observed over the last decades were meant turning the town (city) names into a significant brand name. The objectives of this article are : - to assess the number of changes in French town (city) names, - to suggest a classification based upon name functions, emphasizing the reasons of town (city) name changes, - to highlight the main challenges underlying the communication of these changes, - to propose a new approach to the name changes as a signal meant to facilitate a better evaluation of the identity of the town (city).
