Abstract:
The relationship between commuting distance and urban form has attracted the attention of researchers and planners for a long time. However, the relationship has remained difficult to grasp, in part because of difficulties associated with its theoretical formalization. In this paper, the concept of « commuting possibilities » is suggested in order to clarify this confusion. According to the proposed framework, urban form offers commuting possibilities and workers choose from these possibilities. The validity of the framework is confirmed by analysis conducted of selected American cities and on groups of workers in Montreal.
