Revue d'économie régionale et urbaine, 2011, vol. avril, issue 2, 245-268

Abstract: Based on a unique database including almost 4000 credit files from 33 microfinance institutions (MFIs) located in Aquitaine, this paper intents to fulfill three objectives : identify MFIs operating in the region, evaluate to what extent these MFIs satisfy social needs and finally how the principal-agent relationship is instituted. It appears that the determinants of microfinance credit supply are quite conventional and similar to those observed in the banking sector. We bring to the fore the fact that two types of microfinance client may be identified : the first type mainly unemployed, uses microcredit as additional financing resources to complete a relatively important business plan, whereas the second type uses microcredit as the only external financial resource available to start up a professional activity. We emphasize lastly the importance of monitoring mechanism upstream of the relationship lending for microfinance reach its full social ambitions.
