Abstract: In sub-saharian countries, fuelwood is the main energy source used by rural and urban dwellers. The increasing demand from cities threatens the sustainability of nearby forest resources. In this context, the understanding of fuelwood supply areas is a major issue for the sustainable management of natural resources. The analysis and spatial modelization of the supply area of Bamako (capital of Mali) show that the main explaining factor of wood flows is the social and economical organization of retailing in rural villages. The set-up of a market place is more attractive than the distance to Bamako. Results deny the traditional orthodoxy of fuelwood catchment areas linking exploitation only to transport costs and wood stocks. Above this new empirical input to localization theories, our model directly contributes to define and to plan management actions aiming to drive fuelwood supply chains in a more sustainable way.
