Abstract:
By examining the relation between the greater Paris Region and its agriculture, this paper sheds light on the questions of food for the city, land occupation and landscapes amenities. Farms occupy nowadays 50 % of the whole surface of the region, but the economic weight of agriculture is quite low. Supply and demand are disconnected and farming position is under the threat of a rapid urban sprawl, which consumes agricultural soils. The first part of the paper is devoted to a careful presentation of local agriculture and agri-food sectors, and to the alternatives (local foods, organics) to this model. The second part puts the stress on the relation between land use consumption and land use conflicts. In the third part we draw some lines for future development of the place and role of local farming, related with changing behaviors of local population and renewed urban and regional planning policies.
