Abstract: Very few studies examine how local employment and labor arrangements appear and evolve. We propose a framework of analysis, mixing an institutionalist approach to the employment relationship and the approach to proximity economics, in order to understand the nature of interactions between actors involved in the employment relationship and the impact of various spatial levels of their interactions on such local arrangements and their dynamics. This framework is used to study the interactions of the actors taking part in the employment relationship in six French automobile employment areas, in order to assess its operational capacity.
