Revue française d'économie, 2016, vol. Volume XXXI, issue 2, 125-145

Abstract: The purpose of this article is to study the impact of team wage expenditure on their sporting performance. We focus on the case of the French championship. The model is estimated over a panel of 36 french football team for the period 2005 to 2014. We find a positive impact of team wage expenditure on their sporting performance. Moreover, by using Probit models, we find that highest bill wage increase the football team probability to qualify to the European competition and reduce their chance to be relegated in Ligue 2. Such empirical result on the french ligue confirm the role played by wage expenditure in the deterioration of the competitive and financial desequilibrium in European football leagues, so that a football wage regulation is necessary.
