Abstract: Several mechanisms can explain why the environmental performance of manufacturing production ? more precisely, the quantity of emissions of CO 2 per unit of output ? vary across countries, sectors, and firms. After reviewing the literature on these mechanisms, we develop a methodology that allows us to decompose the specific impacts on the environment of each mechanism. Using very detailed data on production and energy consumption in India, we decompose these impacts for the Indian industrial sector during the period from 1990 to 2010.
