Abstract:
Using an exhaustive database of French GPs who entered into private practice between 2005 and 2011, we analyze the determinants of GPs? practice location choices within a region. GPs may choose to locate in 4 types of areas: ?Suburb?, ?Central town?, ?Isolated town? and ?Rural?. We find that individual variables weakly influence the choice of a type of area. However, health care supply and demand variables, fiscal incentives implemented and facilities available in an area significantly explain GP?s practice location choices. Using these results, we simulate the impact of three measures encouraging GPs to practice in rural areas.
