La place des emplois atypiques dans les trajectoires d’entrée dans la vie active

Revue française d'économie, 2017, vol. XXXII, issue 1, 59-93

Abstract: « Atypical forms of employment », deviating from the employment norm of full-time permanent employment, have extended on the French labor market over the past decades. Young people are the first to be concerned by those forms of employment. They can either constitute a transitory situation towards a durable insertion, or have a scarring effect on future medium term employment probabilities. We compare the labor market entrance trajectories of first-time school-leavers of 1998, 2004 and 2010. We use a dynamic Markovian model of heterogeneous transitions on the labor market. Our analysis shows that the employment norm is becoming more and more difficult to reach. Recent evolutions, linked with the crisis of 2008, appear to be strongly heterogeneous. They contributed to slow down or even compensate the decreasing trend in the steppingstone effect of full time fixed-term contracts towards permanent fulltime situations.
