Abstract:
Informality is a major feature in most developing countries. Its importance has given rise to a substantial body of literature in development economics, both in terms of evaluation and public policy. In this article, we propose a review of the literature on this topic. We first propose to measure informal employment in some developing countries and to identify the main determinants of informality. We then present the main theoretical approaches to informal employment. Lastly, we shall review the public policies in the presence of an informal sector.
