Abstract:
This paper examines whether cooperative banks are more stable than commercial banks during the recent financial crisis. For this end, we combine propensity score matching (PSM) and GMM estimation technique to compare the stability of european cooperative banks with an adequately matched control group of commercial banks during crisis (2007-2009). The combination of these techniques constitute one of the methodological contributions of this paper. The results indicate that cooperative banks are more stable than commercial banks. Furthermore, considering the “too big to fail” concept, we find that the stability of cooperative banks does not vary according to their size.
