Abstract:
The objective of this paper is to study Payments for Environmental Services (PES), which are monetary incentives given to voluntary farmers to change their agricultural practices in order to preserve the environment, and to analyze the obstacles to their deployment. We analyze farmers’ decisions to adopt such practices in a context where reputational effects are important, from the eyes of peers to those of consumers. After presenting the work of Bénabou and Tirole [2006] on the role of social norms, we propose an adaptation of this work to the issue of PES. We deduce proposals for the improvement of this instrument.
