Abstract:
This article aims at studying the performance of the international tourism attractiveness of La Reunion in the long-run. To this regard, we use both stylized facts and time series modelling to detect potential growth regimes into the dynamics of La Reunion’s international tourism arrivals over the period 1981-2019. Our results state that this French overseas destination is locked in a structural regime of stagnation since the beginning of the 2000’s. This finding can be explained by both exogenous shocks and faulty domestic economic policies. Finally, an economic strategy based on a strong dependence on international tourism is too risky to be considered as a sustainable model for this territory.
