Abstract:
There has been a recent increase in the number of studies on the subject of diversity. These studies appear particularly interested in assessing the effects of the diversity on performance. More specifically, diversity is in such cases often measured by social demographic factors, with a particular focus on gender. This paper intends to revisit the concept of diversity at it is presently encountered in this mainstream literature. We will critically assess its present meaning, and in the end offer a somewhat different conception of diversity. Our work on gender is based on our empirical work involving interviews with female board members employed by some of the largest French quoted companies.
