Abstract:
This article goes back to the origins of logistics. To do so, it studies the function of ?Maréchal général des logis?, from which Jomini coined the term ?logistics?. Based on an analysis of 18 military treatises published between the 16th and 18th centuries, the article highlights the fact that the difficulty at the time of organising the accommodations and movements of an increasingly large army led to the creation of the function. The ?Maréchal général des logis? was thus the person who coordinated the halting and marching phases of an army in the field, mobilising geographical, mathematical, and informational skills and relying on an operational structure made up of furriers, guides, and wagonmasters.
