Abstract:
The rise of the collaborative economy underlines the pivotal role of platforms in mediating providers and users of goods and services. Drawing on Actor-Network Theory, this research focuses on the structuring of platforms as networks. Based on two case studies in the car rental sector, it shows how they problematize, interest and enrol a variety of human and non-human actors. Beyond their matching function, findings also reveal the way they affiliate and professionalize suppliers of different sizes, thus generating self-generated competition that they need to manage.
