Abstract:
This article uses a case study and the concept of capability to understand what happens when an organisation grants more autonomy to its employees. The results show that room for manoeuvre depends on the ability of employees to convert decreed autonomy into real opportunities. They also show that autonomy, whether granted or claimed, is in reality the result of individual and collective learning, experimentation and negotiation.
