Abstract:
Social enterprises (SEs) are called upon to implement a democratic form of governance that reflects the diversity of stakeholders and ensures the right balance is struck between business logic and social logic. Through a comparative case study, this article highlights the characteristics of governance driven by business imperatives and characterized by a lack of democratic debate, leading to a form of accountability in search of legitimacy. The configurations highlighted contribute to a more general understanding of the governance tensions facing SEs.
