Abstract: This research paper in political science analyzes the emergence of norms for assessing microfinance. Despite the microfinance sector?s diversity, institutions are evaluated based on a common set of criteria that are largely financial, inducing the risk of mission drift. However, as the sector evolves and new challenges emerge, assessment standards based on diverse social criteria have come to the forefront, reflecting different perceptions of what microfinance is, and what it should be.
