Abstract:
Recruiting movie and TV extras consists in matching stereotypical fictional characters with job seekers of varied profiles. Street-level bureaucrats of the French National Employment Agency for Artists involved in this process frequently face selection dilemmas as they try hard to meet the request of recruiters while advocating for those they consider as their legitimate users, mostly actors who strive to make it in the performing arts, TV and film industries. However, their subordinate position to casting directors limits their leeway as far as selection is concerned, leading them to make compromises behind the scenes.
