Abstract:
The aim of this paper is to demonstrate that Business and Employment Co-operatives (BEC) are factories of institutional innovation: they experiment new forms of professional relationships and new linkages between individual business and collective commitment. At first we analyze how BECs came into existence in France, their social and political background, the tensions present in this singular project. Then, we focus on a French BEC to analyze the « institutional fabric» at the heart of its evolution, before questioning its impact and limits, and to what extent it can allow us to imagine new institutions, beyond the binary logic which usually borders work situations.
