Abstract:
This article explores the contemporary transformations of the modern retailing sector through a study of the trajectory of Carrefour group during the first decade of the 21st century. We adopt a financialisation perspective. We show how a restructuring of stock ownership has fuelled a new profit strategy, which has negatively impacted the operations, the wage-labour nexus and the relations with stakeholders. The analysis is based on descriptive financial and operational statistics and semi-structured interviews of top managers, managers and workers of Carrefour.
