Abstract:
Using the theoretical framework of the economics of convention, we attempt to understand the priority worker cooperatives give to wage equality and to explore the conditions necessary for inequality to be considered fair. A field study of 39 worker cooperatives in the Rhône-Alpes region enables us to analyze the employees? and managers? discourse on the fairness of wage policies. Beyond the shared legal cooperative principles, we identify significant discrepancies between worker cooperatives.
