Abstract:
Based on an empirical analysis, this paper explores the meanings, understandings, and practices of transactional sex in Burundi, in particular sexual exchanges for material gain in its capital, Bujumbura. The analysis proposes to reveal two forms of transactional sex: that of ?bienfaiteurs? and that of ?sugar daddies.? Both of them reveal the forms of male domination in this society, where these practices are more widespread than we think, in particular in female-headed households.
