Abstract: At the turn of the 1970s, the French government supported the development of a research center that helped it implement policies intended to modernize the agri-food industries. The article describes the style of economic reasoning that this research center developed in responding to its contractors. It emphasizes the intellectual, institutional, and political foundations of this style, which was part of a general movement to reconfigure research in economics applied to business.
