Abstract:
Although the wage system has been contested for more than one century, the possibility that it could disappear that is greatly feared today, as it could means the lost of numbers of mechanisms of social welfare. This paradox calls for a new look on what we call the employment relationship. In this article, we suggest that the traditional understanding of the wage earner as the one who rents his/her services or capabilities may be restrictive. We argue that this approach overlooks both the role and the real effects of modern management. This analysis suggests new forms of « commitment contract » instead of « employment contract » to see workers as engaged in the building of desirable futures instead of subordinates.
