Abstract:
This article aims at understanding how the question of the State is dealt with in contemporary critical theories. We will start by going back to 20th century Marxist theories of the State, especially to Gramsci?s and Poulantzas? approaches. We will then come to the current intellectual conjuncture. First, we will address theories of ?anti-power?, a set of influential theories that focus on the share of social power that is external to the State. We will then describe the current renewal of Marxist theories of the State, especially the approaches of David Harvey, Giovanni Arrighi and James O?Connor. One important dimension of this renewal is the connection contemporary Marxists establish between the analysis of the State and the issue of the spaces of capitalism.
