Abstract:
In this article, we describe and assess the macroeconomic performance of Germany in the past decade. We look into wage base determination, competitive strength and export performance. We further explore how successful the German model is in view of the long-term challenges posed by the ageing of the population and the need for higher employment and economic growth. We compare Germany with various other European countries, including Belgium and the Scandinavian countries. We conclude that the German model is only partially successful for the time being. The leader is not convincing in important aspects such as investments in human capital and full use of the employment potential.
